A teenager has gone blind after a diet that consisted almost entirely of chips, Pringles and white bread left him severely malnourished.
A lack of B vitamins and other nutrients caused parts of his optic nerve to die, irreversibly damaging his sight, researchers said yesterday. The case highlighted the perils of extreme fussy eating and GPs needed to be alert to the dangers of a diet restricted to junk food, they warned.
The boy, from Bristol, who is now 19 and asked not to be named, had eaten normally as a small child before developing an aversion to foods with certain textures at the age of about ten, his mother said.
