Hy-Vee implements primarily self-checkout stations in stores – KCCI Des Moines

Hy-Vee grocery stores may look a little different when it comes to checkout. Johnston is one of the multiple Hy-Vee stores that are switching to primarily self-checkout lanes. The company said this decision is not pandemic-related, but was a decision made prior to March. It’s been tested in 140 Hy-Vee stores across eight states with no loss of employee jobs. They are not self-checkout only, the stations can be converted when times are busy and they need to be staffed by Hy-Vee employees. When it is self-checkout, an employee will be nearby to assist when needed. The company said it’s an effort to try something new. “That is Hy-Vee’s culture. We are always looking for innovative ways to make our business better, and make it a better experience for our customers. So, we are excited about trying new things,” said Dawn Buzynski, with Hy-Vee communications. Hy-Vee said the use of predominantly self-checkout stations is a pilot program. But, the company said the self-check out structure will be implemented in every metro store. While the pandemic didn’t have a hand in this decision, it has tripled the use of Hy-Vee Aisle Online.
