There are many reasons why it can suddenly start smelling different, and for the most part, there isn’t any reason to start panicking.

Although urine shouldn’t have a particular odour, it can smell stronger in the morning, or when you’re dehydrated.

But there are certain foods that can temporarily give urine a stronger smell – here are the most likely culprits.

Bananas, salmon, turkey and chicken

Foods that contain lots of vitamin B-6 can cause urine to smell strongly if you eat enough of it.

Vitamins that the body processes or doesn’t use are let out through the urine, which is what results in the odour.

Taking vitamin supplements or certain medications can have a similar effect – or even turn your urine a fluorescent yellow or green colour.

Alcohol and coffee

These substances can result in urine with an odour because they are diuretics.

It isn’t a particular brand or type of alcohol or coffee that has this effect, though – it’s the fact you’ll often end up urinating more often, and if you become dehydrated as a result, this is the condition that results in urine that smells.

Asparagus

Most people associate asparagus with foul smelling urine, but the odour is actually a metabolite, which is a substance produced during metabolism.

Only some people can smell it, so you may find that you won’t notice it at all. Lucky you.

Broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts

Cruciferous vegetables can cause a strong smell in urine.

This is because they contain a chemical called methyl-mercaptan, which produces a bitter odour after consumption.

Curry

The cumin and coriander found in curry maintains its odour-causing chemicals as it’s processed through the kidneys.

This can result in a pungent-smelling urine.

Puffed wheat

Typically eaten as a breakfast cereal, puffed wheat can cause urine that gives off an odour like malt – which is similar to the way it smells in your bowl.

Hopefully that doesn’t put you off.

Usually you only need to consider getting medical advice if you’re having additional symptoms alongside urine with an odour.

For example, if you have a burning sensation while urinating or feel the need to go more than usual, you could have a urinary tract infection, or UTI.

If your urine smells abnormally sweet, you’re thirstier than normal and feel tired, there could be a chance you have diabetes, so it’s best to seek the advice of a healthcare professional.
